Drug abuse treatment:

The National Institute on Drug Abuse or NIDA states that drug abuse treatment must follow certain principles to be effective. Some of these principles are:

  • No single drug abuse treatment plan is appropriate for use on all individuals: This means that matching aspects of a treatment with the particular needs and problems of an individual is important in achieving ultimate success.

  • Treatment must be readily available: Because those who are suffering from drug abuse may have uncertainties about seeking treatment, any opportunity wherein they are openly willing to receive treatment must be taken advantage of. If treatment isn't readily available, then the chance to help someone recover may be lost.

  • Multiple needs must be addressed, not just aspects touching on drug use: An individual's drug abuse problem stems from his social, psychological, vocational and legal issues. Drug abuse treatment must cover all issues affecting the person to be able to resolve the drug abuse problem.

  • Treatment plans should be regularly assessed and modified, as needed, to meet the individual's ever-changing needs: Patients change during the course of treatment so their treatment plans must be dynamic enough to keep up with them, ensuring recovery.

  • Remaining in a treatment plan for a set period of time is needed: Just how long an individual stays under a program depends on his needs and problems. However, research indicates that most patients reach their threshold around three months into treatment. But just because a patient showed improvements doesn't mean he's recovered. Drug abuse treatment plans must involve strategies that engage patients in order to keep them in treatment for the needed period of time.

  • Counseling, whether in groups or individually, as well as other therapies for behavior are critical: In therapy, patients are able to address motivational issues, build skills for resisting drug use, replace drug-using ways with more productive activities, and improve on problem-solving skills, all of which are needed when they get of primary treatment.
