Dual Diagnosis Therapy & Recovery
When treating dual diagnosis recovery is a reality, which can occur regularly, provided that the dual diagnosis therapy is provided by a legitimate dual diagnosis program. Valid dual diagnosis programs can be found in only a few locations across the country, as there are only a few dual diagnosis programs that have the properly educated, trained, and experienced staff, as well as the proper dual diagnosis program curriculum.
In a legitimate dual diagnosis recovery program, the majority of patients suffer from substance abuse and one or more psychiatric disorders, concurrently. While dual diagnosis programs may have clients who suffer from chemical addiction, only these programs are staffed and devised with the dual diagnosis patient as its focus.
Dual diagnosis therapy consists of significant initial evaluation and assessment, the development of a treatment program, followed by extensive individual and small group therapy, as well as other adjunctive therapies and education.
A dual diagnosis recovery program should have an experienced consulting psychiatrist, psychologist, PhD/PsyD or Master’s level therapists, counselors, and other treatment professionals who are educated and trained to provide dual diagnosis therapy. Primary dual diagnosis therapy ranges from cognitive-behavioral therapy to psycho-dynamic therapy to solution-focused therapy, among others. Adjunctive dual diagnosis therapy may include experiential therapy, art therapy, equine and pet therapy, narrative therapy, among others. Additionally, a dual diagnosis program may provide physical therapies such as massage, yoga, meditation, bio-feedback, acupuncture, among others.
In summary, a dual diagnosis recovery program provides treatment for those suffering from dual diagnosis issues. Dual diagnosis programs must meet certain, elevated standards of treatment and care to qualify as such. Dual diagnosis therapy is much more complex that regular addiction therapy, due to the concurrent issues.
