General Information

Vicodin is an opioid, commonly prescribed because of its analgesic (pain relieving) properties. Vicodin is a Schedule III drug – high psychological dependence and low to medium physical addiction. Vicodin acts by binding with opioid receptors in the brain and spinal chord (Central Nervous System) and blocking or reducing communication between nerve and other cells, thus effectively altering the way pain is experienced. Additionally, Vicodin can effect regions of the brain that mediate what we perceive as pleasure, which results in the initial euphoric ‘high’ that abusers experience; an increase in the activity of the neurotransmitter dopamine causes the strong euphoria that many find pleasurable. It is commonly prescribed for post-operative or intense pain. Vicodin also aids to calm and relax those experiencing painful ailments, thus accelerating recovery. It is particularly useful for sufferers of rheumatoid, osteo or other types of arthritis. Chronic use of Vicodin can result in tolerance to the drug so that higher doses are required to achieve the same initial effects. Long-term use can lead to physical dependence.

Side Effects

Nausea, constipation, lightheadedness, rash or itchiness, dizziness, and mood disorders are frequently reported side effects.

Addiction

Continued Vicodin use, after the cause for its use has abated, will most likely result in addiction/dependence. Resulting cravings for the drug can supersede the desire for food or water.

Withdrawal Symptoms

Most withdrawal symptoms are physical in nature, including diarrhea, vomiting, cold flashes, muscle pain, bone pain and restlessness.

Vicodin Detox and Abuse Rehabilitation

Vicodin detox is critical, prior to commencing rehabilitation. Although vicodin detox, itself, is not a treatment for vicodin addiction, it can help relieve withdrawal symptoms while the patient adjusts to being Vicodin free. Long-term Vicodin use should not be abruptly discontinued except under the supervision of an experienced physician, who can manage the withdrawal symptoms and minimize the withdrawal period.

Miramar Treatment Centers provide substance abuse treatment for women with physician assisted and monitored detoxification, as well as comprehensive rehabilitation services in Laguna Beach and Newport Beach in Southern California.
