General Information

Xanax is the trade name for Alprazolam, a short acting drug in the benzodiazepine class used to treat anxiety disorders, as well as an adjunctive treatment for depression. Alprazolam, absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream, binds to receptors in the Central Nervous System increasing inhibitory effects. It may also have some anti-depressant activity. Xanax is very effective in the treatment of panic disorder, with/without agoraphobia. It may also be used in the treatment of severe case of Borderline Personality Disorder. Although it is very effective in treating panic attacks, some Psychiatrists are reluctant to prescribe it, due to the high possibility for dependence when used chronically. Indeed, there is now a general consensus among many psychiatrists and other physicians that Alprozolam poses a particularly high risk for misuse, abuse and dependence.

Possible Side Effects of Alprazolam

Common
     Somnolence (drowsiness)
     Euphoria
     Confusion
Less Common
     Headache
     Fatigue
Rare
Sleep apnea, blurred vision, tachycardia, bradycardia, diarrhea, constipation and many
     others.

Withdrawal Symptoms

Xanax withdrawal symptoms may include agitation, panic attacks, rebound anxiety, muscle cramps and seizures.

Addiction

Prolonged use of Xanax eventually changes the brain in fundamental and lasting ways, which explains why addicts cannot simply quit without professional help. This is why treatment is essential. Drugs of abuse take over the brain’s normal pleasure and motivational systems, advancing the drug use to the highest priority in the individual’s motivational hierarchy, thus overriding all other motivations and drives. These brain changes are responsible for the compulsion to seek/use drugs, which is defined as addiction. Substitution with diazepam or clonazepam in some patients may reduce the risk of addiction, as these drugs remain in the blood stream longer, thus having a reduced risk of dependency.

Xanax Detox and Abuse Rehabilitation

Xanax detox is critical, prior to commencing rehabilitation. Although detoxification itself is not a treatment for addiction, it can help relieve withdrawal symptoms while the patient adjusts to being Xanax free. Fortunately, there are a number of effective options for treating Xanax addiction. Long-term Xanax use should not be abruptly discontinued except under the supervision of an experienced physician, who can manage the withdrawal symptoms and minimize the withdrawal period.

At Miramar Laguna Beach’s Residential Substance Abuse Treatment women are provided physician assisted and monitored detoxification, as well as comprehensive rehabilitation services in Laguna Beach and Newport Beach, California.
